CHEBOYGAN CO. -- A man convicted of causing severe injuries to a one-year-old boy by shaking him has been sentenced to 7.5 to 30 years behind bars.

23-year-old Sean Bauers pled guilty to one count of first degree child abuse in February.

"I believe the sentence was just, considering the consequences of Bauers' conduct," said Daryl P. Vizina, Cheboygan County Prosecuting Attorney.

Bauers was arrested after a sergeant with the Michigan State Police was dispatched to McLaren Northern Michigan's Cheboygan Campus for a complaint of suspected child abuse,

Hospital personnel brought the sergeant to a boy who was suffering from severe bruising, bleeding of the brain and broken ribs, according to the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Office. The boy's injuries were so severe that he was airlifted to Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids where he has spent the last five months recovering.

"Harlow {the child} has already suffered significantly and the reports we are receiving suggest some injuries are long term," Vizina said. "We are praying for his recovery."

Bauers was sentenced to the 7.5 years, but no more than 30 years, the prosecutor says.
