Have you ever wondered how much your school's superintendent makes? The Mackinac Center for Public Policy has you covered.

The Center released a new online database that provides detailed compensation data for every conventional and intermediate school district superintendent in Michigan.

The online tool also includes links to individual superintendent contracts.

"While compensation for superintendents only amounts to about 1-percent of public school spending, the public should have easy access to this particular information," said Michael Van Beek, director of education policy. "As CEOs of districts and often the highest paid government employee in a local community, superintedent pay deserves an extra level of public scrutiny."

The districts, statewide, with the highest paid superintendents were:

  • Utica: $300,789
  • Rockford: 290,445
  • Kalamazoo: $280,469
  • Farmington: $277,867
  • Wayne-Westland: $273,875

To put that into perspective, the superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools is paid $218,795. The superintendent of Cadillac Area Public Schools makes $137,900 and the superintendent at Mancelona Public Schools makes $129,257.

While many school districts make some of this information available on their district websites, this database makes it easy to compare pay across districts.

The database is part of the Center's Michigan School database project that includes links to every school union contract, district level funding and spending statistics and a high school achievement database that adjusts test score results based on socioeconomic factors.
