Icy back and side roads led to additional school closings Tuesday.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- Another half dozen or so school closings were called into our newsroom Tuesday morning due to very icy back/side roads.
While there was anywhere from a dusting of snow up to four inches of snow in spots Monday night, the main problem was the freezing of water from recent rain/melting on the non-primary roads which again caused schools such as Cheboygan Public to close for the second straight day. As we approach mid-February, the weather still a bit of a roller coaster ride with temperatures Wednesday/Thursday warming into the mid-30's before tumbling back into the teens by the weekend.
The next round of snow arrives Thursday, which is Valentine's Day. At this point, limited moisture and the quick movement of this system will lead to a general 1-3" of snowfall Thursday. Looking back at the history books, Sault Ste. Marie's greatest ever Valentine's Day snow was only 5.2". In marked contrast, Traverse City has seen 15.2" of snow on Valentine's Day. All of that falling on February 14, 1985, which is that city's biggest ever February snow.
