LANSING (AP) -- Michigan lawmakers are poised to start considering Gov. Rick Snyder's proposed budget.

Hearings on the Republican governor's $50.9 billion spending plan are scheduled to begin Tuesday in Lansing.

GOP-led budget committees will hear testimony on the budget in coming weeks and months. The goal is to approve it by June.

Major items in the plan include proposed gas tax and vehicle registration fee increases, and a call to expand Medicaid to hundreds of thousands of people without health insurance.

Legislators initially will get broader overviews of the budget before diving into details later on. The next fiscal year begins in October.
