TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- National statistics show coronary heart disease continues to take its toll on women and men with one in three Americans falling victim to the silent killer.

As part of Munson Medical Center’s ongoing Heart Health efforts, area women and men have the opportunity for a one-on-one heart disease screening during the weeks of Feb. 18 and 25 at Munson Community Health Center in Traverse City.

Screenings will be performed by a registered nurse who has been specially trained to provide this service. Munson staff will provide the following tests and assessments, and spend time reviewing what the numbers mean for one’s heart health. The screening includes:

  • Blood pressure
  • Body mass index
  • Depression and stress level assessment
  • Nutrition review
  • Smoking and alcohol assessment
  • Family medical history review
  • Blood test for glucose, lipid profile, and cholesterol levels

Participants will leave with a personalized action plan including risk factor reduction materials, steps for improving heart health, and referrals for further cardiac care as needed.

Cost for the program is $55, and grants are available. To schedule an appointment, call (231) 935-8561.

Munson Community Health Center is located at 550 Munson Ave. in Traverse City.

7&4's Melissa Smither interviewed cardiothoracic surgeon at Munson Medical Center, Dr. Shelly Lall about the signs and symptoms of heart disease for both women and men.  Click here for the complete interview that aired during 7&4 News Today.
