GRAND TRAVERSE CO. -- Residents of Grand Traverse County who have septic tanks will be paying more to have their waste disposed of in 2013.

The Grand Traverse County Board of Public Works passed a motion to raise the cost of treating septage from twelve cents per gallon to eighteen cents.

The County says the increase will help pay for financial losses at the waste water treatment plant.

"This is the first time that we've raised the rates since 2005," Rob Manigold, Peninsula Township supervisor said. "Everything's been going up and we tried to hold the line but we had to raise the rates today."

Originally, the County had looked at charging those with septic tanks a 25 dollar per year special assessment fee. That plan was rejected after it drew a lot of public criticism.
