GRAND TRAVERSE CO. -- Starting today, people in Northern Michigan will have more options when it comes to where they grocery shop.

The first Aldi in Northern Michigan opened this morning on South Airport Rd in Traverse City.

Customers got a chance to sample Aldi brands in the store and enter a sweepstakes for a holiday prize pack.

Ryan Smith, the Traverse City District Manager says that Aldi promotes cost saving practices like encouraging people to bring their own bags to help keep prices low.

"We know that a lot of families are struggling all over, especially in northern Michigan and it's really great to give families a high quality, low-cost option for a new grocery outlet," Smith said.

In 2011, Aldi opened 75 new stores, and they plan to open 80 more stores across the country in the near future.
