TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a handgun from a car in Garfield Township.

The investigation involves at least three young men from Traverse City. The parents of the young men have been cooperating with police in an effort to recover the gun.

The gun owner did not know that the handgun had been stolen until he was contacted by investigating officers. The gun had been missing for about two weeks.

According to the Sheriff's Office, there is no information at this time that would indicate the stolen gun has been on any school grounds.

Traverse City Area Public Schools sent emails to parents on Monday explaining the situation. TCAPS says the district were first contacted about the situation last Thursday.

TCAPS says there is a "zero tolerance" policy for weapons on school campus, and student safety is the "most important priority".

"I want to ensure you that law enforcement and TCAPS administration took immediate action in response to this investigation to ensure the safety of all students, staff and the community," Principal Rick Vandermolen said in the email.

The investigation is still open.

Anyone with information regarding this case is requested to contact the GTSO Detective Bureau through Central Dispatch at 231-922-4550.
