DETROIT (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Education says that a system created to run low-performing Michigan schools has made the finals of the 2012 Race to the Top-District competition.
The department said Monday that the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan is among 61 finalists for the award. It says there were 372 applicants for the award, and the authority is the only Michigan finalist.
The Education Achievement Authority was set up to run schools with the lowest academic performance. It got its start this year, taking control of 15 Detroit schools.
The Department of Education says the Race to the Top-District program will provide about $400 million for programs to personalize learning, raise student achievement, improve teacher effectiveness, and ready students for college and careers.
