CHEBOYGAN CO. -- A Cheboygan County man has been charged with child abuse after shaking a one-year-old boy.

Near the end of October, a sergeant with the Michigan State Police was dispatched to McLaren Northern Michigan's Cheboygan Campus for a complaint of suspected child abuse, according to a press release from the Cheboygan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

Hospital personnel brought the sergeant to a one-year-old boy who was suffering from severe bruising, bleeding of the brain and broken ribs, the release says. It was determined that the injuries were so severe that the boyshould be airlifted to Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The defendant, 23-year-old Sean Bauers, is accused of causing the injuries by shaking the child.

"The number one concern at this point is with the child's health," said Daryl Vizina, Cheboygan County Prosecuting Attorney. "The reports we are getting from Devos Children's Hospital are not positive."

Vizina said that while it is not confirmed, the child may have some "serious lifelong disabilities" as a result of the injuries.

The boy will likely be hospitalized for several more weeks according to Vizina.

Bauers is being charged with one count of first degree child abuse and held with a $300.000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing is set for November 28.

Anyone with information regarding this situation is asked to call the Michigan State Police at 989-732-5141.
