TRAVERSE CITY -- Art Schmuckal, the patriarch of the Schmuckal Oil Company died last night.
The Schmuckal Oil Company was founded in 1955 when Art and George Slane developed the partnership for Slane and Schmuckal Oil Company.
From their small beginning, Schmuckal Oil has grown into 26 company owned and operated gasoline/convenience stores and a supplier of Shell Oil.
Art and his wife Mary were not only local business owners, but philanthropists.
Art became a member of the Northwestern Michigan College Foundation Board in 1983 and committed generously to all major initiatives.
NMC leaders say Art's sense of humor, passion for community, and tremendous generosity will be missed.
Art was 91 years old.
