TRAVERSE CITY -- Over the past week, students at Traverse City's Eastern Elementary School have been collecting donations of holiday candy to send to troops serving overseas.

Students had the goal of 125 pounds of candy, after they successfully collected 100 pounds last year. The students exceeded their goal by collecting 181.5 pounds of candy to donate to the overseas troops.

This year, Eastern Elementary partnered with TC Touching Hearts to collect personal care items in addition to candy. The personal care donations and handmade cards for the soldiers will be sent to troops serving overseas.

The items are expected to arrive in time for the holidays.
