TRAVERSE CITY -- A program that's been helping hundreds of Northern Michigan families weatherize their homes is facing severe funding cuts this year.
The Weatherization Program gives low-income families relief from expensive energy bills by making the home energy efficient.
John Stephenson, the executive director at Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency says for the past three years the program has been able to transform an average of 450 homes in the ten county region a year.
Stephenson says, "This year with funding reductions in both state and federal dollars we'll only be able to do 90 homes."
With only 90 homes getting done, the waiting list keeps growing. Right now there are 900 families in Northern Michigan waiting to make their homes more energy efficient.
Stephenson says, "Being realistic, we're looking at a five year waiting list."
