TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Republican State Representative Wayne Schmidt is looking to go three-for-three in November, securing his seat in Lansing for another two years.

In his first two terms, Schmidt said he worked hard to channel funding for the ‘Pure Michigan’ campaign.

Additionally, he cites successes he has had helping turnaround Michigan’s economy.

“One, we have been able to balance the budget twice, ahead of schedule, reducing a structural deficit and eliminating nearly $22 billion in pension debt. Two, we have been able to reduce unemployment, creating 80,000 jobs last year, and we are on pace to do the same this year,” Schmidt said.

Facing off with Schmidt in November, is political newcomer Betsy Coffia.

Accepting no "PAC" money or out-of state money, the theme of her campaign has become campaign finance reform.

If elected, Coffia said she will fight for our future by investing more in public education.

Additionally, she wants to create jobs by supporting a "creative" economy.

“We need to be looking for whatever incentives we can give to draw the arts and draw the film studios and production studios…to our state and make it more attractive. We've taken a step back from that and really drove some of the film industry away and drove some of the arts industry away. We need to find ways to bring them back through tax incentives and other programs,” said Coffia.

Voters in the 104th district have less than six weeks to decide who they will support in the general election.
