KINGSLEY -- A northern Michigan horse rescue organization is feeling the affects of an ongoing hay shortage.
Horse North Rescue in Kingsley is at its limit with twelve horses in its care. Officials with organization say many of the horses were relinquished due to owners not being able to find hay to feed the animals or not being able to afford the high cost of hay.
Michelle Smith tells 7&4 News at least five calls come into the rescue daily with people needing to give up their animals. There are also several horses on the rescue's waiting list.
The Michigan Equine Foundation is offering help for horse owners struggling with higher costs of feed. On Friday, Sept. 28 the non-profit organization is hosting an event to help horse owners prepare for winter and give tips on dealing with the hay shortage. The free seminar will take place at the Northwestern Michigan Fairgrounds starting at 6pm.
The following day the organization is holding a Health Care Clinic at the Northwestern Michigan Fairgrounds. The clinic will take place all day Saturday, Sept. 29 and will include free vaccinations, dentistry and other services.
