LANSING -- Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is visiting the Middle East as part of an effort to educate members of the U.S. military about casting votes back home.

The weeklong trip is hosted by the U.S. Navy and the Federal Voting Assistance Program.

A press release about the trip says it began Sept. 8 includes Kuwait and Qatar stops at military installations, time at U.S. embassies and shipboard visits.

The Republican says it's important to ensure military members can vote in all elections, including the state and local ones that affect family members in the U.S.

Minority Democrats in the state Senate this week introduced legislation to make it easier for members of the armed forces stationed internationally to vote in Michigan elections.
