ALPENA, MICH. -- UPDATE: After speaking with Alpena County Animal Control, we have learned that the dog is back in the owners custody. The owner was not home and had put the 4 month old Husky in an upstairs room. The dog scratched out a screen and got onto the roof.

The dog was returned to the owner this morning. Alpena Police will follow up with the owner.

A dog was taken into police custody after it was rescued from the roof of a home in Alpena.

The Alpena Police Department received calls that a dog was whimpering and barking for an hour. After a short search they found the dog on the roof of the porch, an estimated 20 feet in the air.

Officers made several attempts to wake up anyone in the home, but it was determined that no one was home.

The Fire Department was ultimately called and a firefighter climbed to the dog and carried it to safety.

The dog was taken into protective custody by city police.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
