EVELINE TWP. -- A 37-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by an unknown person she had given a ride to.

The incident took place around 1 am Wednesday morning. The suspect subsequently stole the victim's truck and abandoned it a short distance away. The suspect later stole a second vehicle that was later located in Boyne City.

The woman was treated at Charlevoix Area Hospital. Her name is not being released due to the nature of the crime, however, police do say she was a Charlevoix resident.

Sheriff Schneider says he is "confident this was an isolated incident and the public continues to be safe."

In the release this afternoon, Schneider cautions people about offering rides to complete strangers saying, "We understand people, with their best intentions, wanting to help others, however, this is a prime example of what can go seriously wrong."

The Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office do have a subject of interest, after collecting evidence. They will continue to interview and collect evidence.
