TRAVERSE CITY -- In this week's Upnorthlive ReVibe, we're teaching you to ReVibe an old refrigerator or floor to create a retro room.

Denine Dingeman, designer at Charitable Resale, shares her inspiration and teaches you to affordably style with ease! She's teaming up with Dan Brady, "tricks-of-the-trade" painter at Dan Brady Painting and Wood Restoration. He brings you time-saving tricks and products that are easy to find and use.

Four Steps to ReVibe a retro refrigerator:

1. Confirm the refrigerator is functional and "solid:" Elements, mechanical and electrical parts should be in great shape and clean. Also realize that older appliances aren't always the most energy-saving choice, however their charm automatically will ReVibe any kitchen into a classic hangout with personality!

2. Clean: Use a household cleaner/degreaser to thoroughly clean interior and exterior surfaces.

"If you want to go all-out retro and can't wait to WOW your friends, you've got to take the simple steps to clean and prep your new/old fridge," said Dan. "Clean it first will a household cleaner or degreaser. Scuff the surface with a medium grit sanding sponge, then apply Breakthrough coating from Northwood paint with a fine finish roller."

3. Scuff the surface: Use a medium grit sanding sponge to prepare exterior surfaces for paint.

4. Paint: Apply breakthrough coating from Northwood paint with a fine finish roller also found at Northwood Paint or your favorite paint supply store.

"If you don't want to ReVibe a retro refrigerator, but you've got a tired and ugly linoleum floor, don't be afraid to paint it," said Denine. "Use Frogtape to create a block grid, and paint a black and white checkerboard for classic retro feel. Stores like Northwood Paint & Supply will help you assemble the supplies you'll need, and you'll get great cost savings from the alternative of replacing the floor."
