LANSING (AP) -- Some state lawmakers want public schools to place more emphasis on honoring the U.S. flag.

The Detroit News reports that bills pending in the Legislature would require schools to mount an American flag in every classroom and require public schools to "ensure" students have an opportunity to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each school day.

Another bill that's been sent to Gov. Rick Snyder would require all governmental entities in Michigan to fly only American-made flags.

Students and their parents would have to report violations of the pledge legislation. They don't spell out specific sanctions for schools that don't meet the requirement.

The issue is creating quite a stir on UpNorthLive's Facebook fan page, with more than 100 people leaving comments.

Sue Jones wrote: "Should have never been taken away in the first place."

Nick Walsh commented: "Maybe they should focus on improving education instead of nationalistic pride."

Molly Gill-Eling left this comment: "I said the Pledge of Allegiance when I was growing up and it didn't hurt me a bit!!"

Nancy Schronce-Marsh wrote: "We did it every morning when I went to school and the world seemed to be a better place back then."

Amanda Reed left this comment: "Something has gone wrong in this country where there is no pride in being an American and people can picket soldier's funerals. It's disgusting. This is a wonderful country, that people from other countries are clamoring to live in. Yes, we need the flag, and yes we need the pledge. And our children need to know that when the flag passes by in a parade, we stand up, that we honor our soldiers as the true super heroes they are, and that it's a wonderful thing to be born in the USA."

Molly Maureen wrote: "Personally, I believe there are many more important bills going through right now that need to be concentrated on. A lot of schools still have the flag and many classrooms still recite the Pledge every morning, why make a law of it? Also, how are they going to regulate that and what is going to happen should a classroom or school not follow through?"
