DOUGLAS, MI -- A West Michigan icon will be passing through Northern Michigan on it's way to it's new home.

The S.S. Keewatin has been docked in Douglas, near Saugatuck for the past 45 years.

The boat was built as a luxury passenger steamer. It was christened in 1907 and sailed Lake Superior in the early 1900's. The original owner, Canadian Pacific Railway, used the ship for nearly 60 years.

It has been docked in Douglas since 1967, being used as a floating museum and local landmark.

The boat was recently purchased by a Canadian group and will be transported from its dock in Douglas to Ontario, via tug boat, to be preserved and displayed at Ontario's Port McNicoll.

Crews have been working for weeks to dig the boat out of the mud so the ship can make it's final voyage north. The tug boat will pull the Keewatin out of Douglas today.
