TRAVERSE CITY -- National Boating Week is next week and one Traverse City group is hoping to help start it off with a splash.

The National Safe Boating Council will attempt to set a world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated, and the Grand Traverse Bay Sail and Power Squadron is urging people to participate.

"Ready, Set, Wear It!" hopes to educate people on boating safety, and comfortable and versatile options when it comes to life jackets. Michigan currently ranks fourth in the country when it comes to boating fatalities.

The Traverse City branch of the event will take place at Boating R Us in Traverse City on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
