College prepares to host thousands at community picnic

TRAVERSE CITY -- Northwestern Michigan College is holding their traditional barbeque fundraiser this Sunday, May 20th.

The event features free admission to the Dennos Museum Center, live entertainment and games and activities for children. The menu featuring Oleson's famous buffalo burgers, coleslaw and much more. It was estimated that more than 9,600 people enjoyed the festivities last year.

In it's history, the barbeque has raised more than $1.5 million for NMC and it's special programs. In 2012, the funds were used for a ship simulator and hydrographic navigation software, among other things.

Tickets are only six dollars in advance and eight dollars at the door. They can be purchased at Oleson's Food Stores, local banks, area elementary schools, the Traverse City Visitors Bureau and NMC locations. The event starts at 11 on NMC's campus.

NMC is also offering delivered meals for home-bound seniors. Orders can be placed by calling the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging at 231-922-4688.
