LEELANAU COUNTY -- A 43 year-old man is dead after his canoe flipped over in Grand Traverse Bay and he was not able to make it to shore.

At around 9:30pm Saturday night, Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City responded to reports of an overturned canoe in the Grand Traverse Bay, just south of Omena.

Within minutes the aircrew located the canoe and the man, who appeared to be unresponsive, about 100 feet from the boat.

Emergency medical technicians arrive and recovered the man, he was taken to Munson Medical Center where was pronounced dead.

His name has not yet been released.

Authorities say he was wearing a life jacket. “Although air temperatures are rising, it is important to consider the cold water temperature and let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return prior to venturing out onto the water alone,” said Keith West, command duty officer at Sector Sault Sainte Marie.
