CHIPPEWA CO. -- An investigation into what sparked a more than 40 acre wildfire in Chippewa County is underway.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office responded to the grass fire near the Lower Haylake area and shoreline of the Saint Mary's River System in Bruce Township around 7:30pm Wednesday.

When deputies arrived they found about 40 acres burning and spreading quickly.  Strong winds to the south was fueling the wildfire and several homes appeared to be in danger.  Within minutes, one home was destroyed along with a vehicle and two sheds.

Fire crews from several surrounding areas along with the Department of Natural Resrouces Fire Division helped get the fire under control.  No other homes were damaged.

The Sheriff believes the fire started sometime between 6 and 7pm.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office at 1-906-635-6355.
