The Bay Street Undergrounding Project is expected to be complete by July 1, 2012.

TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Light & Power will begin work on the final phase of the Bay Street Undergrounding Project on Monday.

The project involves removing the overhead electric facilities along portions of Bay Street, across from West Bay, and placing them underground.

Beginning next week, Bay Street will be closed at Division Street on both the east and west side. Bay Street will be closed between Division Street and Cedar Street, with limited access to Wayne Street (near the Bayview Wesleyan Church). There will be limited or closed access to Bay Street, east of Division Street to Second Street, as the project progresses.  All bike and pedestrian crosswalks across Division Street and the Grandview Parkway will remain open.

The Bay Street Undergrounding Project, which supports the Traverse City Bayfront Improvement Plan, consists of two phases.

Phase one was completed in the fall of 2011 with the installation of underground conduits, manholes and related facilities. This spring the electric cables will be installed in the conduits followed by the removal of poles and overhead wires, which includes the lighthouse pole.

The exact location for the work on Bay Street is the section east of Division Street to Second Street. There will also be additional work on Bay Street, west of Division Street, up to the Wayne Street intersection and along a limited area of Wayne Street, between Cedar Street and Bay Street.

“Unfortunately, this construction will cause some inconveniences to the community during the final phase of the project,” said Ed Rice, L&P executive director. “We appreciate the community’s cooperation as L&P works to aesthetically improve the bayfront.”

The Bay Street Undergrounding Project is expected to be complete by July 1, 2012.
