(AP) -- Some teen drivers would be banned from using cell phones under legislation approved by the Michigan Senate.

A bill that would ban cell phone use was approved 28-10 Thursday in the Senate.

The measure advances to the House.

Supporters of the bill say it aims to cut down on distracting driving among young teens.

Some lawmakers who voted against the measure say it doesn't go far enough to crack down on all reasons for distracting driving.

The bill would ban cell phone use for those with Level 1 or 2 graduated drivers' licenses.

The measure in general would apply to drivers younger than 17, at which point drivers often begin applying for Level 3 licenses.

Level 1 and 2 drivers' licenses already have restrictions, including limitations on nighttime driving.
