TRAVERSE CITY -- It's a disease that affects 400,000 people across the country and northern Michigan is one area with a high rate of people who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis. There is also currently no cure for MS and researchers are not sure what exactly causes the neurological disease that affects the central nervous system.
That's why March 12th-18th is National Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week. 7&4's Melissa Smith sat down with Karin Boyd from Grand Traverse County who was diagnosed with MS in 2005. Boyd says everyone's symptoms are different with MS but she first started noticing her own symptoms from the disease when her legs started to become numb and it was difficult to walk at times.
Boyd credits her family with being her main support system since she says they've helped her get through the challenges that MS brings.
Since there is no cure for MS, there is an annual MS Walk in Traverse City to try and raise money for research. The walk which is put on by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Michigan Chapter, is set for Saturday, June 23rd at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.
