Death investigation at the Grand Traverse County Jail

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office has requested that the Traverse City Police Department investigate the death of a 21 year-old inmate that took place Friday night at the Grand Traverse County Jail.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the 21-year-old Traverse City man was brought into the jail around 4:00pm Friday for a probation violation.

The man was booked and placed in an observation cell at the Jail.  At approximately11:00pm Corrections Officers were conducting head count when they noticed the inmate’s arm was discolored.  When the Officers investigated they noticed that the inmate was unresponsive and was not breathing.  EMS was called and the Corrections Officers immediately began CPR.

EMS arrived at the Jail and attempted life saving resuscitation.  The man was pronounced dead while at the Jail.  There were no obvious injuries, and at this time no foul play is suspected, The death does not appear to be intentional.
