Officials expect the final special use permit document will be reviewed and granted final approval at the board's next meeting.

ACME TWP. -- After a nearly 7-hour long meeting, the plan to build a Meijer store in Acme Township is moving forward.

The Acme Township Board adjourned its meeting just before 1:00am Thursday.  The discussions revolved around the proposed Phase 1 of the Village at Grand Traverse, the key feature of which is a proposed Meijer store.

According to Sharon Vreeland, Township Manager, the key to the process was a 21 page draft “findings of fact” document that lists the key documents from the application review process, the standards for approval found in the overall project permit granted in 2004 and the township zoning ordinance.  The board went through the document item by item, page by page, reading each aloud for the audience, and made some adjustments to it along the way.

At the end of the meeting, a motion was made by Trustee Paul Scott and seconded by Clerk Dorothy Dunville to approve the findings of fact as modified and to preliminarily approve the special use permit application for Phase I of the VGT project, including the proposed Meijer store.

The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m.  Officials say at that time it’s reasonable to expect that the final special use permit document will be reviewed and granted final approval.
