EMMET CO., MI -- A new 10-foot wide asphalt trail will be paved between Bear Creek Township and Alanson, thanks to a $942,000 grant.

The trail will be a seven-mile extension to the Little Traverse Wheelway Trail that runs from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs.

The federal transportation grant was awarded to pave the trail as a transportation corridor and also for its recreational use.

Top of Michigan Trails Council believes this will be an important addition to the growing trail system in Northern Michigan.

"Last year we noticed a huge increase in the number of people who used the trails. I think people will enjoy it even more, 26 miles of some of the best trails in Northern Michigan, and now another seven, it's great," says Jeff Winegard, Top of Michigan Trails Council Executive Director.

Work on the improved trail will begin this year.

The total project is expected to cost about $1.3-million.

Additional funding will come from other state grants and Emmet County will pitch in $100,000 from its trail capital fund.
