KALKASKA CO. -- A Kalkaska man is dead tonight after his mobile home caught on fire just before noon.

When crews arrived to the home, it was fully engulfed.

That's when they learned there was a handicapped man stuck inside.

The fire spread rapidly throughout the house.

55 year-old Dan Harmon died and was found laying next to his bed.

Family members were at the door trying to get the man out, but couldn't because of the fire and smoke.

"They tried to make entry, the neighbor across the street tried to make entry of the house, and non of them were successful, there was too much smoke and fire, mainly it's the smoke, you can't see through the smoke, and you can't breathe in that smoke. Everybody retreated, and we tried to do the same thing when we got here, and we were unsuccessful," says Kalkaska Township Fire Chief Derek Hogerheide.

We're told the fire likely started in the kitchen.

The death and cause remain under investigation.
