Historic ship gets ready to sail

The Maritime Heritage Alliance of Traverse City, Michigan  announces its  winter Basic Crew Training for individuals who are interested in crewing on the Schooner Madeline or the Sloop Welcome.

The first of five winter classroom sessions will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium of the Center Pointe Building  12935 S, West Bayshore Drive, immediately north of the Elmwood Township Marina.  Additional sessions are scheduled for February ,  March , and April.


The winter basic crew training sessions are the pre-requisite for onboard training that will be held in June 2012.  During the four sessions, lead by MHA  Mates and Captains,  trainees will learn about sailing  traditional sailing vessels.

Topics include: helmsmanship, seamanship,  basic navigation,  marlinspike,  line handling, safety, and Great Lakes maritime history . Trainees must be at least 18 years old, current members of the Maritime Heritage Alliance, and purchase be a Sail Training Manual.
