Body of Traverse City airman returns to US

TRAVERSE CITY -- The body of a Traverse City airman, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan, returned to the United States Sunday.

Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana confirmed Sunday, that the body of Tech. Sgt. Matthew Schwartz arrived at a base in Dover, Delaware.

The 35-year-old airman from Traverse City died on Wednesday in a bomb blast in Helmand Province.

His Brother-in-Law tells 7&4 news that Schwartz was serving his 6th tour of duty and worked as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist. Schwartz was based out of the F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming but visited the Traverse City area often with his wife, Jenny and their three daughters.

Schwartz was a 1996 graduate of Traverse City Central High School with 12 years in the Air Force.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
