Mt. McSauba has slow start, but keeps fingers crossed for good year

CHARLEVOIX, MI -- it has been a slow go so far this season for some northern michigan ski resorts, and city-owned Mt. McSauba in Charlevoix is no exception.

Charlevoix has received little snow so far this year, but Mt. McSauba wants to remind people they're open.

It has relied on snow making machines to form a 12-to-18 inch base and the ski hill hopes to have what they call a "banner weekend" to kick their season off.

"What really bums us out and our snowmaking team is we just get the guns fired up and then we get a south wind, and we know it's going to warm up in 24 hours, so it's been such a short stretch, we should be making snow by now, but we make it, we lose it, we make it, so now we're getting close, and probably another week, we'll be set for the year," says Bo Boss of Mt. McSauba.

So far this year, Mt. McSauba has spread more than two-million gallons of water over their hill in their snow-making efforts, which is not a cheap task, and a lot of it hasn't made it through the warm-ups.

The hill opens up every day at 11.
