Money spent on the gift certificates will stay local
TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- In Traverse City, the Downtown Development Authority set a new record with sales of their gift certificates.
This year, they sold more than $310,000 worth of gift certificates, $141,000 in the month of December alone.
That's a 27-percent increase in sales from 2010, when they sold $243,000 worth in certificates.
The DDA says they're popular for gifts because the money stays here.
"Most of these dollars, almost all of them will be locked right into the community because most of the businesses in downtown are all local businesses there are a few exceptions that do take the gift certificates but its a way to keep the money local and return it again and again and again in the community," says Bryan Crough of the Traverse City DDA.
The gift certificates can be used at pretty much any downtown store and restaurant, even the State Theatre and City Opera House!
You can buy them at the Traverse City State Bank, Convention and Visitors Bureau, DDA, and the city parking office.
