City to take over lighthouse

FRANKFORT, MI (AP) -- This month, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the federal government is transferring the 67-foot North Breakwater Light to the city of Frankfort.

A year ago, officials in the northwestern Lower Peninsula community that the U.S. Coast Guard was considering giving up the lighthouse at the mouth of Frankfort harbor.

The lighthouse got a new 25-foot base in 1932. It has six stories, connected by steel, double-rung ladders.

It's among 15 in Michigan and 60 nationwide that have changed hands under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000.
