More than a dozen homes have been broken into
BAY VIEW/EMMET CO., MI -- A warning tonight for seasonal home owners in Emmet County: State police say you should keep a watchful eye.
More than a dozen homes in the Bay View Association have been broken into in the past couple of months.
This particular community closes down roads and homeowners winterize their homes for a complete shutdown at the beginning of November.
Michigan State Police detectives say all break-ins are similar.
"What we're finding is they're cutting the glass or breaking the glass to gain entry through doorways mostly, and then they're going in and there's not a lot being taken, but there's probably more loss financially through the destruction of gaining entry through these residences," said D/Sgt. Jerry Briolat.
The detective urges seasonal home-owners to make sure their home is completely locked, board up windows if possible, and even put in security systems to help deter thieves.
If you have any information about the break-ins, call the Michigan State Police in Petoskey.
