ROGERS CITY, MI -- A Presque Isle County school has some extra money to work with as routes are made safer for children who walk to school.
The Rogers City School District was granted more than $372,000 to install and make improvements to sidewalks and crosswalks near the school.
The project is expected to begin next year and will make walking for students safer by improving routes and making them safer.
"Most of our local kids walk to school, we have very few bus pickups, in town at all, we have a few drop-offs, and that'll be great for students to have safe routes to come to school, especially when we're still in the dark some days," said Superintendent Kathleen Makowski.
The "Safe Routes to School" program also encourages more children to walk to school for their daily fitness.
Three other schools in the state also received a similar grant. Flint schools, along with schools in Muskegan and Newaygo County, will have money to work with to make routes safer.
