EMMET CO., MI -- It hasn't snowed much so far this fall, and that's good news for local road commissioners.

The Emmet County Road Commission Manager says each day it doesn't snow, there are substantial savings.

The large plows haven't been put on the trucks yet and the salt and sand has hardly been touched.

Emmet County Road Commission Manager Brian Gutowski says on average, the county goes through 20,000 tons of salt and sand, and right now, the road commission is able to do road maintenance rather than clean-up.

"We're saving money, and it's hopefully going to save us time and effort in the spring too, we're doing final touches on our gravel roads, hopefully it's going to get cold here, and these gravel roads are going to get frozen down, and in pretty decent condition, so when spring break-up comes, roads are going to be in pretty fair shape," said Gutowski.

The average truck carries 10-tons of salt and sand at a price of $700 per truck.

There are 27 trucks on the road when a big snow hits, and the trucks can go through two or three loads in a day.
