Update: Neighbors say the news comes as a shock

ROGERS CITY, MI -- Several unanswered questions into what led police to arrest a Presque Isle County woman five months after her baby died.  Investigators claim she's to blame.

The investigation stems from a newborn death back in June, and investigators tell 7&4 News they believe they have enough evidence to prove 28 year-old Karrie Mulka was responsible for the baby's death.

The investigation led Rogers City police to this Rogers City home.

Officers arrested 28 year-old Karrie Mulka for involuntary manslaughter.  She was arrested exactly five months and one day after the investigation began.

The warrant claims "Karrie Mulka did cause the death of Baby Mulka”...and goes on to say "The defendant failed to seek out medical care for the infant."

But many questions about the investigation remain.  Both the Presque Isle County Prosecutor and the Rogers City Police Chief refused to talk with us today.

I talked to one neighbor who lives across the street, and he says he remembers back in June when two ambulances and a police car showed up at the Mulka home.  He said up until that point, he didn't know what was going on, and then he found out Karrie was pregnant.

"I did hear after that she did have a baby, and never heard after that what happened to the baby," said Keith Peacock, Mulka’s neighbor.

Peacock has known the Mulka family for 28 years.  He says the news comes as a shock.

“They've just been good neighbors all the time, every one of them, and I never knew anything like that would ever happen," said Peacock.

Mulka's preliminary investigation is scheduled for December 13th.

She faces the felony charge which could mean 15 years in prison.

7&4 news will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as soon as they're known.
