Suspect bought ring with phony check
TRAVERSE CITY -- An East Bay Township man is behind bars for writing a phony check to buy expensive jewelry at a downtown Traverse City store.
Tuesday afternoon the suspect, who was caught on surveillance video, bought a $600 ring at Federico's Design Jewelers. Store co-owner, Laurie Wildman says something didn't seem right about the check he used to pay.
"As he left the store, I looked quickly over the check and the one thing I noticed was that it said Huntington State Bank. The spelling of Garfield Road was also wrong." says Wildman
After calling police she contacted other downtown businesses to warn them.
A few hours later, the suspect went into Miner's North where police arrested him. Investigators say his 4-year old daughter was with him.
Traverse City Police Captain Steve Morgan says, "It's sad that someone would partake in a criminal offense with a child with them, its sad."
Captain Morgan says the Federico's ring, fake identification, and banking information was found on him. He was arrested and taken to the Grand Traverse County Jail.
The little girl is now in her mother's custody.
