BOYNE CITY -- Update: The Defense Department says Army Pvt. 2nd Class Jack L. Diener II died Monday in Kandahar province from wounds sustained in a small-arms attack by insurgents.

A community is mourning the loss of a solider from Boyne City.

Family members tell 7&4 News that 20 year-old, US Army Pvt. 2nd Class Jack Lee Diener died recently while serving in the war in Afghanistan.

Donna Diener, his grandmother,  told us they learned of his death last night  and specific details are still not known.

Jack Diener attended Boyne City High School and graduated back in 2009.
