TRAVERSE CITY/ACME -- TCAPS conducted a recent parent poll and results showed that 38% would be interested in the option of an International Baccalaureate Primary Program. The poll also revealed 21% would like Montessori expanded. TCAPS stressed they need to start developing programs that meet the requests and needs of their parents.

Bertha Vos, which was closed a few years ago, is an asset where a lot of people don't need to be moved around and programs can start quickly. Repairs to the building can be made with funding from contingency left over from a bond issue- the district came in under budget for certain projects. Operational money will come from fund equity, then the foundation grant each student brings in (estimating 2-3 years to reach this point).

TCAPS will cap the number of students the first year, and keeping a total building count to 200-250 people translates to about 75-100 students. They will try to fill the school with students from the TCAPS attendance area and then if room, open it for schools of choice.

Steve Cousins, the TCAPS superintendent, said that this is a risky decision for the school board, being in uncertain financial times, but that it's exciting to take a step in meeting parents' requests and providing a different type of education for students. He thinks this is a wonderful opportunity for TCAPS kids and although they will be the ones to benefit the most, the Acme community will also gain satisfaction in the building coming back to life.

TCAPS is taking the recommendation of re-opening to the Board of Education this month, and hopes to open Bertha Vos for the 2012 school year.
