LANSING (AP) -- A tree from northern Michigan will light up Lansing Friday.
Governor Snyder will do the annual lighting honors of the state Christmas tree. The 61-foot-spruce that sits in front of the Capitol was donated by Jerry and Beverly Kilburn of Houghton Lake.
Beverly Kilburn rescued the Blue spruce seedling from the middle of the road with her father when she was a little girl after it had fallen off the back of a tree farm truck and it was planted next to their garage.
"When the tree committee begins accepting nominations for Capitol Christmas tree each year it's expected many of the submissions will come from the U.P. or other forest properties, not from someone's backyard," said Rep. Bruce Rendon, R-Lake City. "This is quite a story for our area."
The evening Silver Bells celebration in Lansing includes music and dance performances, self-guided tours of the Capitol, children's activities and a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus complete with live reindeer.
Weather permitting, it will finish with a fireworks show over the Capitol.
