The Parks & Rec. Committee of TC Voted Unanimously for a Dog Park
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Parks & Rec. Committee of Traverse City held a special meeting tonight to get the public's input on having a dog park.
The plan is to put the park near the new Veteran's Park off of Division street, near the tennis courts. Attendees got to speak out about their excitement for the new park, but also voice concerns. Issues brought to attention include noise level for the neighboring houses, the capacity limit, the location, and the name of the park. It was insured the noise level will be kept under control and the capacity will be user controlled, complete with safety gates preventing dogs entering the park from interacting with dogs leaving. The name hasn't been voted on yet, but it has been stated that in order to keep the dog park separate from the Veteran's Park, the word "veteran" won't be used in the title.
Some meeting attendees were very excited about the prospect of a dog park, and the committee stated that if this park does well, other location suggestions for more dog parks will be considered.
The city-owned park has set a goal to open by May 2012, but needs your help to reach that goal. The committee hopes to give their unanimously voted-in mission statement to establish the fenced-in, off-leash dog park to the city commissioner on November 28th. This would put the dog park on the schedule for their December 5th meeting. You can show your support by attending the city commission meeting, or sending e-mails to its' members.
