Local veteran is relieved troops are coming back to US

TRAVERSE CITY -- US troops began leaving Iraq Wednesday in the first stage of their complete withdrawal from the country by the end of the year.

Here in Northern Michigan, both veterans and friends of those who served in Iraq say they're relieved troops are leaving.

Those 7&4 News spoke with also said the reality of war weighs heavily on troops when they arrived home.

Ernest Larkin, whos sister and friend are in the military says "I don't think you can prepare. Everyone deals with things differently, just try to be there and let them deal with it in their own way and in their own time. Don't force them to share experiences."

The Grand Traverse County Veterans Affairs Office has a military counselor on staff to help troops and military families. For more information, you can call 231-995-6070.
