TRAVERSE CITY -- With the recent Halloween rush people tend to have candy and specifically chocolate treats around their house.  That's why pet owners need to be more cautious especially because chocolate can be dangerous to dogs and cats.

Dr. Jen Klabunde with Northwood Animal Hospital says there are certain types of chocolates that can be more deadly than others.  She says it's best to always keep candy away from your pets and to know the signs and symptoms of chocolate toxicity.

The signs include:

  • drooling
    vomiting
    diarrhea
    restlessness & stumbling
    seizures

The types of chocolates that most to least dangerous to your pets include:

  • dry cocoa powder
    unsweetened baker's chocolate
    dark chocolate
    milk chocolate
    white chocolate
