GAYLORD, MI -- A 24 year-old woman is behind bars in Gaylord after crashing her car into a police cruiser while driving drunk.

It happened around 2:30 Friday morning on South Otsego Street in Gaylord.

The officer was outside the patrol car on a traffic stop when the cruiser was hit.

The drunk driver then swerved off the road and hit a parked car and a sign.

Investigators say it could have been worse.

"The office did exactly what he was supposed to do as for positioning his car on a traffic stop and probably saved a lot of injuries so we're thankful nobody was hurt," said Chief Joe Fitzgerald of the Gaylord Police Department.

The patrol car was extensively damaged and will be out of commission for a while.

The woman driver was hauled to jail.
