LUDINGTON -- A major renovation project is in the works for Memorial Medical Center in Ludington.

The hospital's CEO, Mark Vipperman, announced the plans at a meeting Thursday morning.

The exact details of the 14-million-dollar renovation plan will be developed throughout the next few months with an intensive analysis and planning process.

Key areas to be renovated are the emergency and surgery departments, outpatient services (consolidating such functions as medical imaging, laboratory, and cardiopulmonary), and a new main entrance on the south side of the building facing Ludington Ave. (US 10).

Construction is expected to start late spring or early summer of 2012. Major construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

The photo shows the south-facing area envisioned in the conceptual plan for the new emergency department and new main patient entrance. Many outpatient services would also be located near the new entrance, greatly reducing the distance patients would have to go after for medical services after checking in.

On the north side of the building would be the expanded surgery department, which would utilize what is currently the main entrance.

Below is a fact sheet from the hospital on the plans:

Project name: Building Exceptional Healthcare
Construction start: Late spring/early summer 2012
Completion: Target for completing major construction—by the end of 2013

Estimated investment:  $14,000,000

Key elements:
Improve design for better patient access and enhanced patient experience
Expand and upgrade surgery department
Expand and upgrade emergency department, including greater privacy during treatment
Enhance outpatient services (medical imaging, laboratory, cardiopulmonary)
New main patient entrance on south side of building facing Ludington Ave. (US 10)
New covered ambulance and emergency center entrance on east side of building
